What is a membrane sweep?

A membrane sweep feels like a new fad, even though it’s been used for the past several years. But it’s a new fad in that it has found its way into standard offerings by providers, including midwives.

But what is it?

  • It’s where the provider takes a gloved hand and runs a finger along the inside of the cervix between the cervix and the amniotic sac.

Why would they do this?

  • It’s said to stimulate the release of prostaglandins which causes cervical dilation and ripening, as well as contractions.

What does it really do though?

  • It causes you to have contractions for 24-48 hours and only brings about a baby a handful of times. It increases your risk for infection and may cause a rupture of your amniotic sac.

Does it ever work?

  • Yes and no. Yes in that if you’re body is at the tipping point - meaning labor only needs a teeny tiny push to start up, then yes it probably will. And no, in that it can also start labor by accident, or result in an induction if the sac is ruptured.

So why are providers offering it like it’s the trendy thing to do?

  • Because the medical system just wants that baby out, which has caused birthing people to think that getting the baby out is standard care and practice. It

But I’m past my due date!

Not necessarily! Due date timelines vary by country. The United States says 40 weeks, but other countries say 41, 42, or even 39. So how can you really know if you’re past due if no one else seems to!?!

*Here is a great article by Evidence Based Birth which goes into more detail on due dates:

But back to membrane sweeps…

So why the bad rap?

  • Because they are unnecessary,

  • Because they are painful,

  • And because they keep happening without informed consent, let alone any consent

When I was in the hospital, not in labor, a cervical exam caused pain and I asked if they did a membrane sweep. The answer was yes - I never consented.

This is happening everywhere and I don’t want it to happen to you. You can avoid this by being clear in the beginning that you do not want any sweeps, or heck go for it and refuse any cervical checks.

Your body is essentially baking the best birthday cake of your life. It needs perfect timing. Your baby will come at the perfect time!

* I am working on mini Birth Education course which goes over topics such as membrane sweeps, stay tuned. Or DM me and I’ll put you on the list as one of the first to know about it!
